Role overview

We are seeking a highly capable and articulate Networking and Security Consultant to lead the technical scoping and solution design of client projects. This is a part-time, ad-hoc contractor role suited to professionals who combine hands-on technical expertise with strong client-facing skills.

The consultant will engage directly with clients during discovery and scoping calls, define solution architecture, and support the creation of technical Statements of Work (SOWs). This role requires an individual with a high degree of ownership, technical accuracy, and the ability to translate complex requirements into clear, actionable solutions.

Responsibilities

Lead technical scoping sessions with clients to understand business objectives, existing infrastructure, and project requirements.

Design and document tailored networking and security solutions based on client needs and industry best practices.

Define and review technical deliverables in alignment with project scope, timelines, and constraints.

Support the creation and review of Statements of Work, including technical scope, exclusions, assumptions, and dependencies.

Liaise with Networking and Security Engineers to ensure the accurate physical deployment of the proposed solution.

Provide technical input to project plans, bill of materials, and low-level designs as required.

Conduct configuration tasks across relevant technologies including switching, routing, firewalling, and wireless.

Ensure all work aligns with client expectations, internal quality standards, and agreed timelines.

Maintain a professional and consultative presence across all client interactions.

Required qualifications

5+ years of experience in networking and/or security consultancy roles.

Proven track record of delivering client-facing technical solutions in a structured, documented format.

Strong understanding of networking protocols, infrastructure design, and security principles.

Hands-on experience with configuration and deployment across technologies such as VLANs, routing protocols, firewall rule sets, VPNs, and wireless controllers.

Proficiency in creating and reviewing technical SOWs, including scope definitions and solution diagrams.

Comfortable with discovery calls, technical Q&A, and translating client needs into technical outcomes.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a consultative mindset.

Ability to work autonomously and take full ownership of technical outcomes.

Desirable qualifications

Relevant certifications such as CCNP, CCIE, or equivalent.

Experience with vendors including Cisco, Meraki, Fortinet, Palo Alto, Ubiquiti, and Ruckus.

Previous experience in SME and mid-market project environments.

Familiarity with project management tools and documentation standards.
